RE: Instrument Calib.

Section 5.3 of ANSI N323 refers to the instruments USED as derived
standards in the calibration of hand-held survey equipment. These
derived standards, if they are indeed being used, must be calibrated at
least every three years. On the other hand, the standard recommends that
survey instruments which are USED for detection and measurement of
radiation fields or surface contamination be calibrated at least every
year.

In either case, the word "USED" (my emphasis) implies that, if the
instrument is sitting on the shelf, it doesn't have to be calibrated.
Once it is taken off the shelf, however, it must be calibrated before it
can be used.
