Maine Yankee - managed by Entergy!

Gleemed from UPI today.
Now this should be interesting ... Franchise Nuke Plants!
-------
BRUNSWICK, Maine, Jan. 8, - Maine Yankee nuclear power
officials are making industry history by selecting an outside company
to manage their troubled Wiscasset facility.
The utility says Wednesday it is the first nuclear plant in U.S.
history to be turned over to an outside operator to solve problems.
Maine Yankee says it is hiring the New Orleans-based Entergy Corp.,
which operates five nuclear plants in Askansas, Louisiana, Mississippi
and Texas.
A signed contract is expected sometime in the next 30 days.
Maine Yankee Chairman David Flanagan, who also heads up Central Maine

Power, the plant's biggest shareholder, said ``Entergy knows how to
improve efficiency, cost effectiveness, morale and safety, which is
what Maine Yankee needs.''
Entergy's nuclear group CEO Jerry Yelverton says a new trend is in
the making, and that ultimately, economic pressure brought on by
deregulation will result in only a few companies operating almost all
the nuclear power plants in the country.
However, spokesman Bill Linnell of Maine Safe Energy warns that while

the concept of out-of-state management may be new, Maine Yankee ``is
still a decrepit old plant.''
The decision comes three weeks after Maine Yankee's chief executive,

Charles Frizzle, was forced off the board of directors.
Maine Yankee has undergone a series of expensive repairs during the
past two years. It was most recently shutdown Dec. 6 to correct
problems with its cable system.
