Re: Airplane crash
The plane was not powered by a reactor, it just carried a small (1 mwt)
reactor to study core physics and potential shielding design. I believe it
was possible to jettison the reactor in the event of an emergency. I don't
recall in the reports I've read (some years back, sorry don't have a
reference) of the plane ever crashing.
The aircraft in question, I believe flew out of Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque.
It was not part of the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion program which developed
and tested engines at INEL (then Nat'l Reactor Testing Station) mentioned in
Frank Borger's response.
You might contact the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque.
Then again, I may be wrong on some of this, it's from some distant memories
from my previous life. I really wish I could remember where I read all this.
