CAL RAD FORUM'S 15TH ANNUAL SPRING CONFERENCE: MESA, ARIZONA, MAY 15-16, 1997
Cal Rad Forum's Fifteenth Annual Spring Conference will be held Thursday and
Friday, May 15-16, 1997 at the Mesa Pavilion Hilton, Mesa, Arizona.
The conference on Friday, May 16th will feature speakers and panels on the
politics, technology, and risks of the management and disposal of low-level
radioactive waste and the Southwestern Compact's proposed regional disposal
facility at Ward Valley, California. Among the speakers and panelists are,

The theme of the Spring Conference is "Ward Valley: Action or Inaction? Will
Politics Continue to Outweigh Sound Science?"
Topics to be covered during Friday's conference will include the status and
politics of the proposed Ward Valley low-level radioactive waste disposal
facility from the perspectives of state officials, the developer, and waste
generators; implicatioins of Ward Valley delays for the national low-level
waste program; risks of low-level waste disposal; disposal options available
now while waiting for new disposal facilities; on-site solidification of
liquid low-level waste streams; and the effects of low levels of ionizing
radiation.
On Thursday afternoon, May 15th, there will be a Special Workshop on Media
Relations: Media Relations - How to Communicate Effectively with Print and
Electronic Media. There is no charge for the workshop which is co-sponsored
by Cal Rad Forum and the Southwestern Compact Commission and will be
presented by the National Low-Level Waste Management Program.
There is a charge for the Conference which begins Thursday afternoon with a
hosted reception. Formal presentations are on Friday.
