ALARA or Not? -Reply

If concentration exceeds 1 DAC, you must monitor AND limit intake consistant
with keeping sum of external and internal dose ALARA by one or more of the
following
                        -control access
                        -limit time
                        -use respirators, or
                        -other controls
Clearly use of respirators is only one option and intake is to be controlled if it leads
to keeping TEDE ALARA. If using a respirator causes larger external dose than it
saves in internal, or if it subjects worker to increased accident or stress risk, than
other measures would be better and permitted.
ALARA analysis includes cost of equipment and even nonquantifiable variables
such as worker stress, decreased visibility, etc.
