I agree.  It is much better to work WITH fire officials than to 
criticize their methods.

Here in Boston, EH&S professionals, including HP's, have actually 
held training sessions for the fire department's HAZMAT team.  We 
showed them around the labs, and introduced them to what they'd 
encounter (chemicals, radioactivity, biohaz, etc)
 when responding to a call to such a facility.

These sessions were very useful, and the response from the fire 
department was extremely favorable.
