Food Safety/ Food Irradiation

Dear Friends:

In today's (August 28, 1997) New York Times, Richard Rhodes, the famous
author and eloquent speaker has written an excellent editorial Titled "
Food Safety's Waiting Weapon."  Of course, the weapon is food Irradiation.
While discussing the facts and myths about this technology, he points out
that the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association and
American Veterinary Medical Association, among others, have endorsed the
process.

I was wondering whether the Health Physics Society has ever issued a public
policy statement on the subject on food irradiation.  If so, I would like
to receive a copy of the public policy statement.
