RE: Radioactive Metals

Otto:
There are several proposals for the recycle of metal from decommissioned
radioactive materials. John Karnak is responsible for developing a
standard the radioactive content of scrap metal. A draft "Radiation
Protection Standards for Scrap Metal: Preliminary Cost-Benefit Analysis"
was released for comment in June of 1997. A draft Technical Support
Document "Evaluation of the Potential for Recycling of Scrap Metals from
Nuclear Facilities" was released July 1997. I received both of these from
John Karnak. The likely standard will be 1 mrem/y.

Dear RadSafers:

Local activists are concerned about the use of "radioactive metals" in
consumer products and household items such as "belt buckles, bed frames,
strollers and appliances." They reference an activist group called Public
Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project, 215 Pennsylvania Ave. SE,
Washington, DC 20003. They have asked for letters to be sent to John
Karnak, U.S. EPA Cleanup and Reuse Center, 401 M Street SW, Washington, DC
20460 by a deadline of January 31.

Can anyone enlighten me about this issue?

Thanks...

Otto
