The major problem with most free radical scavengers for 
radiation protection is chemical toxicity.  The dose 
required to produce the desired radioprotective effect is 
greater than the minimum for toxic effects.  The drug also 
must be present in the tissues at the time of exposure.  A 
few microseconds later is too late.
