Canadians reject nuclear disposal

Canadians follow the lead of US political-sociological trend ... safe
disposal but not accepted by the public. Safe technology succumbs
to public perceptions once again (this sounds like a script from
the Greens Party agenda)! See the article below:

OTTAWA, March 13 (UPI) _ A panel set up to study nuclear waste
management says the public does not accept the idea of disposing of
nuclear fuel waste deep in the rock of the Canadian Shield.

Blair Seaborn, who headed the panel, told reporters today that from
a technical viewpoint, disposing of nuclear waste in the rock is
safe enough, but the idea has not been accepted socially.

The eight-member panel has recommended that the government not go
ahead with the concept for the time being and slow down the process
of searching for a site for nuclear waste disposal.

Seaborn said the panel was set up in 1989 ``to examine the concept
of...the burial of Canada's nuclear waste,'' as well as public
  acceptability of the concept.

He said the concept was to bury the waste at a depth of about 1,640
feet (500 meters) in the rock called the Canadian Shield, with
multiple barriers between the waste and the surface.

Blair said, ``It's the panel's view that a number of additional
steps are required to develop an approach for managing Canada's
nuclear fuel waste that could achieve broad public support.''

He says the panel recommends the federal government issue a policy
statement on managing fuel waste, ``so that Canadians will be clear
on the government's long-term approach'' to the issue ``in all its
  complexity.''

It also recommends the government ``initiate a process to involve
  aboriginal people.''

Seaborn says eminent scientific people found a number of flaws in
the technical design of the nuclear waste disposal sites, but they
feel they can solve those problems.
