Garamendi leaves Interior

April 7, 1998
Davis, CA

I was interested to see in the news yesterday that John Garamendi, a deputy
secretary in the U.S. Department of the Interior, is leaving government
service to join a private investment group. John Garamendi is the former
California State Insurance Commissioner who was appointed to the Interior
Department under Bruce Babbitt with the apparent primary assignment of
blocking the opening of the Southwest Compact's low-level radioactive waste
disposal site at Ward Valley, California. Mr. Garamendi has also been
credited with working on environmental issues including disputes over water
usage in California and setting federal policy on natural resources in
California and Alaska. Mr. Garamendi's wife, Patti, is Associate Director
of the Peace Corps.
