I really sympathize and empathize with Sandy. Her postings get
misinterpreted too.
I did not imply, nor did I mean to imply, and I certainly didn't explicitly say,
that the W. Alton Jones Foundation gives ONLY to anti-nuclear groups, or that
all their recipients are fringe groups. Far from it.. There are many
recipients of their funds who are truly charitable organizations, as well as
non-profit research organizations doing excellent work. Among them is National
Public Radio, of which I am a dedicated listener. The same can be said, by the
way, of other foundations -- information also available on the web. The
Rockefeller charities certainly give to many other organizations besides NIRS.
I continue to be puzzled, in fact, by foundation support of organizations like
NIRS, NRDC, etc. Just to head off the apparent need of some RADSAFErs to read
hidden meanings into postings, I am not being sarcastic. I am really really
puzzled., The recipient organizations make no secret of their goals, they are
not charities, they do not really serve a function that helps society (as, for
example, the Audubon Society does). Southwest Research and Information Center
of Albuquerque is dedicated primarily to keeping the WIPP from opening and to
harassing Sandia and Los Alamos, for example. Although one may agree with such a
goal, it is certainly not charitable and does not appear to serve a societal
function. The organization does not do objective research, its name
notwithstanding. The question is: why does this activity merit foundation
support?
This is not to say that all foundations should all support the same
organizations -- certainly no one expects them to. I would really like to
know WHY these major foundations give up to millions to anti-nuclear groups. By
the way, these are tax deductible as well as tax-exempt millions.
Clearly only my own opinion.

Battelle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory * Nov 1996 - $125,000

To protect the environment and reduce the risk of nuclear proliferation

"Love me; love my nuclear weapons." Or is it simply "the enemy of my friend
