Nuclear Dump Opponents Rally
Nuclear Dump Opponents Rally - (AUSTIN) -- Plans to construct a
low-level nuclear waste dump in west Texas are drawing protests
as the U-S Senate gets ready to vote on the plan. U-S Senator
Paul Wellstone of Minnesota led a demonstration on the steps of
the state capitol by opponents of the plan. The Senate votes this
week on a measure that would provide 55-Million dollars in federal
funding for a dump to store radioactive waste from a nuclear plant
serving Vermont and Maine. It would be built near the poor, mostly
Mexican-American community of Sierra Blanca. Opponents say it's
an example of environmental racism.
