Re: NRC scraps commercial nuclear power terrorism program
Dear all, yes, we had an international conference on Chernobyl at the IAEA
in Vienna at 10-year anniversary in April, 1996. Look up the conference
proceedings (I have them stuck away in box somewhere) or the subsequent
quarterly IAEA publication from 1996 to find the pertinent statistics. Of
course, it was nothing like numbers below -- 30-some persons died during
course of or shortly after the accident. Actual deaths resulting from
accident over next several years was tragic but certainly not of the
magnitude dying from natural catastrophies such as earthquakes, tornadoes,
hurricanes, etc. This was probably worst case event, hopefully (and
probably not) to be repeated; as terrible as it was, it should still be kept
in context so far as human casualties are concerned (there are plane crashes
where hundreds have died in single accident; the titanic disaster; etc.).
And, of course, there were numerable lasting effects, persistent
health-related problems, etc. which need to be taken into account, as well.
But hardly of the magnitude of a wartime battle, etc. Human history is full
of grim events from which, hopefully, lessons are learned and improvements
are made. Probably, only good to come out of the Chernobyl accident is
that it sealed the fate of the communist empire (USSR)...
