Unit Head, Radioactive Materials Licensing Section, Bureau of Radiological Health, New York City Department of Health (Research Scientist)

Salary: $47,587 to $55,652

Job Description

Applying sound health physics principles and New York City Codes in the evaluation of radioactive material license applications for human-use and non-human use facilities in New York City. Assisting in the coordination and participation of the Bureau with State, National and International radiation regulatory agencies in assembling safety, accident and incident data for statistical and epidemiological research and medical use. Supervising and training subordinate (Senior Scientist, Scientist-Radiological Health) in radiation health physics issues related to the licensing and inspection of radioactive material for research and medical use. Preparing, editing and updating license guidance documents and other technical documents and advisories related to radioactive materials licensing. Overseeing the Radioactive Materials Inspection Section in formulating laboratory protocols for the identification of unknown radioactive materials through liquid scintillation, gamma-ray spectroscopy and multichannel analyzers. Providing leadership to subordinates in the interpretation of data and data findings

Preferred Skills

Experience in a radiation control program or other position which provided training in the use, control and evaluation of radioactive materials, including review of license materials. Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills.

Qualification Requirements

(1) A doctorate degree from an accredited university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or behavioral science and one year of experience in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity in the appropriate field of specialization: or (2) A master’s degree from an accredited university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or behavioral science and three years of responsible experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year in a responsible supervisory or administrative capacity: or (3) A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field as described in "2" above.
