RE: Resignation from the Source Recovery Program

Dear Sherry:

AAAGGGH! How could they DO that to you, and to your customers? These types
of bureaucratic decisions, which are made without consideration for
employees and customers, really upset me. It sounds like it's a done deal,
or else you wouldn't be resigning. I'm sorry.

As you may remember, after waiting patiently for years and years, our number
was coming up (like next MONTH) to ship our two PuBe sources. Does this mean
the whole program is over, or just transferred? In any event, if they are
uprooting your whole operation, we are guaranteed that there will be more
delays. We are renewing our NRC license this year, and I had hoped to take
plutonium off completely. Guess not. And I suppose the idea of an AmBe
recovery program is dead in the water too. We're stuck with a bunch of old
sources, and I had been hoping for an economical solution.

Not being familiar with the organization, who do I talk to at DOE? Anybody
else out there in RADSAFE who is as upset about this as I am? Maybe we can't
do anything about DOE's decision, but we can at least let them know we
aren't happy.

Good luck to you in the future.

Subject: Resignation from the Source Recovery Program

On October 1, 1998 the management of the PuBe Recovery Program at Los
Alamos was transferred from DOE/HQ Defense Programs, to DOE/HQ
Environmental Management. DOE/EM has made the decision to not fund Los
Alamos to process any sources. I am EMPHATICALLY against this decision and
feel I have no other recourse than to resign my position as the Radioactive
Source Recovery Program (RSRP) Coordinator, effective immediately.

Please refer all questions to DOE.

It has been great working with all of you, and I will truly miss you.

Good Luck,

Sherry W. Jones
