NBS handbook #92, (3/9/64) SAFE HANDLING OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS, Section 4.1
states, in part, "Although shielding can be calculated by an expert with a
reasonable degree of acuracy, the transmission through a finished shield during
conditions of use should be measured." ...

Best I could do... there's probably something better to reference, but I haven't
