RE: radium connection
To All:
Much of the radium obtained by M. Curie was produced in Canonsburg, PA in
the 1920s by a private firm, Standard Chemical Company (name may not be
exact). A very interesting historical account of the extraction of radium
from ores, the manufacture of sources, the procurement by a national
women's group, and the presentation of a source (or sources) by the
President was published by a Canonsburg newspaper in about 1927. This
information was uncovered during a records search in 1976-77 as part of
DOE's early FUSRAP discovery phase. The site was renovated under UMTRA in
the 1980s.

Subject: radium connection
The Philadelphia meeting had an interesting talk on the M. Curie -
Philadelphia connection.
FYI the following site has some interesting data on the NIST - M.
Curie
connection. Fortunately we don't have some of the other attributes
of the
Philadelphia connection, e.g., Lansdown (sp?). But the 62 yr old,
glass-encased Hönigschmid radium sources are an interesting source
to
contemplate. :-)
But more of interest is the historical linkage to some of our
standards as
discussed here.
