CANADIAN REGULATORS HAVE BARRED USE OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS
FYI....
NUCLEAR NEWS FLASHES - Wednesday, December 1, 1999
--CANADIAN REGULATORS HAVE BARRED USE OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS in medical
research labs, but not in medical diagnosis and therapy, in three Toronto
hospitals until University Health Network (UHN), the coordinating agency,
restores safe working conditions and fills the chief safety officer's
position. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) Nov. 29 cited UHN's
"repeated breaches" of safety regulations and license conditions at Ontario
Cancer Institute, Toronto General Research Institute, and Toronto Western
Research Institute. The AECB specified none of the instances involved
exposures to the public or "abnormal exposure to workers." The AECB said it
notified UHN of regulatory concerns in February but received no response,
and the chief safety officer job has been vacant since July.
