Re: Type B Package Tests



1990 IAEA regulations classify type B containers as B(U) or B(M).. Type B(U)
meet all requirements including 9 m drop test, 800 deg C thermal test and
operating temperature range -40 deg C to +70 deg C. Brittle fracture may
occur in some types of carbon steel below 0 deg C.  Engineering assessment
by an approved organisation may be accepted in lieu of actual tests under
some circumstances. Usually it is more economical to actually test small
items.
Type B(M) containers require approval from each competent authority because
they do not meet all Type B (U) requirements.
