Re: Re; Story about Chernobyl on Thurs 26 April about 5:50PM EDT

Maury, I found the two articles interesting, but have a few comments.

Firstly, if it was the Danilov cemetary that the was refered to as the place

where thousands of Chernobyl victims were buried, then I would recommend

being suspecious of the new articles. The Danilov cemetary is fairly old

and is pretty full. I find it hard to believe that the Russians could have

gotten many people into it.

Secondly, Prof. Leonid ILyin's comment on Pripyat I find hard to believe.

Many of the people I talked to in Ukriane were quite specific about

commenting about clouds from Chernobyl passing over Pripyat, with lots of

stuff falling out of the clouds. One individual I talked to commented on

the large crowds that gathered on the bridge at the entrance to Pripyat

because it had the best veiw. And that the smoke from the plant passed

right over their heads. And of course even today Pripyat is highly

radioactive. I was there in 1998 with a meter and was getting readings of

around 50 to 100 uR/hour.

That said, it was always my impression that the Ukrainians and Belorussians

were inflating their claims of health effects in order to attract more

international money.
