Below is a summary of a HP job announcement with the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District. The
position is a GS 12, 1306 Health Physicist. The
primary responsibilities are environmental restoration
and decommissioning of outdoor areas, buildings and

Duties: Serves as, the Health Physicist for the North
Atlantic Division (NAD)HTRW Design District. Reviews
and studies proposals of radiation related documents
including, but not limited to, Records of Decision,
Engineering Evaluations and Cost Analysis, Scopes of
Work, Work Plans Site Safety and Health Plans, and
procurement actions to assure completeness and
compliance with all USACE, Federal, State and Local
regulations. Provides comments to improve technical
quality of the reviewed documents. Interprets and
applies NRC, EPA, OSHA, DA, and USACE regulations,
standards and guidance pertaining to the procurement,
possession, use, transport, transfer, and disposal of
radioactive materials and radiation generating
devices. Where guidelines do not specifically apply,
uses professional judgment and ingenuity in
interpreting and adapting guides that do exist.
Provides technical advice to professionals within the
organization and to contractor personnel. Prepares
specifications for various types of projects performed
by in-house workforce as well as outside contractors.
These recommendations are generally accepted as being
technically correct and are reviewed for effectiveness
in meeting program objectives.
Investigates cases of excess radiation exposures and
incidents of deviation from proper control of
radioactive material. Schedules periodic health
physics inspections of radioactive materials use and
storage areas, and, during inspections. Identifies
common hazards to worker safety and health. Determines
and reports recommended corrective actions and
follows-up on recommended corrective actions.
Assesses the level of risk associated with the
radiation hazards of operations performed within the
NAD and projects that are restoring site conditions
for unrestricted radiological release of properties to
the general public. Determines the environmental
conditions and restoration needs over diverse areas.
Recommends safe work practices and procedures for
radiation survey operations as well as usage of
equipment containing radioactive source materials.
Determines consistency of the NAD policies with NRC
guidelines and DA policies. Develops/evaluates
programs to ensure that personnel exposure to
radiation is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
