Radiation "cooking " of some foods may be standard, soon.



As a naive medical examiner I lectured Aviation Engineer Force during the Korean war. In all previous wars, more troops died from diarrhea, typhus and other disease than from enemy action. Cooking, canning, refrigeration and freezing preserve foods generally well, but chicken salmonella and hamburger e coli can still be deadly.



All preservation degrades nutrition some. Cooking destroys about half the vit C, carrot CHO is converted from slow to rapid absorbtion, etc. However, changes seem relatively unimportant with ionizing radiation sufficient to kill insects and bacteria.

 I hope irradiation of most meat products will soon be usual..
