What shutting down a nuclear power plant does is increase the amount of
coal burned at coal-burning power plants, thereby resulting in increased
air pollution, acid rain, environmental mercury contamination, global
warming, and associated health and environmental problems. In contrast,
nuclear power is safe, clean, and nonpolluting. The self-proclaimed
"environmentalists" who oppose nuclear power are actually performing a
great disservice to the environmental cause.
