RE: Societies issue primer on radiological terrorism threats:Kearnypracticalities



However, KI will only protect your thyroid.  It does

nothing for the other radionuclides released from

fallout following a nuclear weapon attack or a reactor

release.  Sheltering would provide immediate

protection followed by evacuation.  Sequestering of

contaminated food and dairy products would preclude

the need to use KI.  



Consider the following:

Windscale NPP Accident -- 1957

    7.4 X 10^5 GBq of I-131 released -- No thyroid

cancers



Chernobyl NPP Accident -- 1986

    1.7 X 10^9 GBq of I-131 released -- over 2000

thyroid cancers



What do you think the differences was?
