RE: Societies issue primer on radiological terrorism threats:Kearnypracticalities
However, KI will only protect your thyroid. It does
nothing for the other radionuclides released from
fallout following a nuclear weapon attack or a reactor
release. Sheltering would provide immediate
protection followed by evacuation. Sequestering of
contaminated food and dairy products would preclude
the need to use KI.
Consider the following:
Windscale NPP Accident -- 1957
7.4 X 10^5 GBq of I-131 released -- No thyroid
cancers
Chernobyl NPP Accident -- 1986
1.7 X 10^9 GBq of I-131 released -- over 2000
thyroid cancers
What do you think the differences was?
