RE: Demonstrator died in protest against transport of nuclear waste

De mortuis nil nisi bonum. *However*, it provides a good example of relative risk for my next radiation safety inservice.

RADSAFErs,

I send an abstract about the news distributed by a trustworthy Austrian

on-line newspaper ("Kurier") on an accident occurred during the

demonstrations against a shipment of nuclear waste from France to

Germany. Another very similar information has been distributed by a

second trustworthy paper (Die Presse).

According to informations of police on Sunday (Nov.7) a young man has

died during protests against the transport of "Castor" containers with

nuclear waste from the Cogema company in Normandy to the intermediate

storage site of Gorleben (in Germany). The demonstrator had chained

himself to the railway tracks close to Nancy (France). Before the

incident a man and a woman had chained themselves to the tracks, the

train was delayed for two hours until the police had broken the chains.

Altogether about a dozen anti-nuclear demonstrators had been at the

site. The train was not able to stop in time and both his legs were cut

off by the train. Despite desperate attempts of the accompanying first

responders his life could not be saved.

ANY COMMENTS????

Franz
