Another Manhattan Project Scientist Passes Away...



The following was in the April 11, 1996 San Jose Mercury
News (no byline):

>   RUSSEL, Edwin Roberts, 82, a chemist whose work helped
>   lead to the development of the first atomic bomb; Sunday
>   in Columbia, South Carolina.  Mr. Russell; one of the
>   few blacks to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project,
>   was recruited in July 1942 to help develop the bomb.
>   Although he did not work on the bomb itself, he helped
>   develop techniques for purifying uranium ore and 
>   isolating an unknown element later called plutonium.
>   In 1947, Mr. Russell returned home to Columbia.  He
>   taught at Allen University for five years and later
>   worked for 22 years as a research chemist.
