I can confirm this US policy also in the case of Austria. Our two research
reactors use enriched uranium fuel from the USA and used fuel has to be
returned to the USA. In older days this was a US precaution that no
plutonium would be separated from such fuel, in modern days it obviously is
a serious drawback for the USA because no reprocessing facility for
"civilian" fuel exists (am I right?) and there are little capacities for
intermediate storage and non for final storage..... May I mention that we
are not unhappy about this, because we have no final storage place in
Austria either. Public opinion!
