The book, _Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation_, does not discuss the 
efficacy of the therapy.  It only refers very briefly to the sequelae.

By virtue of the thyroid problems mentioned here, I take it the doses 
were rather high.  However, just out of morbid curiosity, was the treatment
effective or was this along the lines of the "radium therapy" from the 
dawn of the nuclear age?
