Signs, Signs, Everywhere the Signs -Reply
To Brad Mitchell (and whoever),
How do you post your open-port glove boxes,
fume hoods, slotboxes, etc.? (assuming you
have these) Do you actually post these
containment/confinement areas as
Contamination Areas (if criteria are met)? Do
you routinely wipe down these boxes to
maintain them radiologically clean?
At Los Alamos National Laboratory, there is a
battle brewing over whether or not to post
these types of containment devices as
contamination areas. They are already posted
as containing RAM or internal contamination.
What are your views? The situation here is
similar to yours: too many postings detract
from their effectiveness. What is the issue:
contamination control or another posting?

Throughout the years, idiosyncrasies in our
program have caused a plethora of signs to be
posted at the Entrance/Exits to the
Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCA) to
inform/remind workers of changes or
deficiencies in the radiological control program
(i.e. workers attempting to remove material
from the RCA without the proper survey,
proper placement of dosimetry, etc.) The
number of postings is overwhelming. I am
looking for a better way to deliver messages to
workers. Has anyone in the RadSafe
community had similar problems? Any
recommendations on a better method of getting
the message across? Thanks in advance for
your response and recommendations.
