RE: CSI Miami: Aiding terrorism

(A question for the "television is fiction" crowd: how long would shows like

"ER" or "The Sopranos" last if they didn't pursue factual reality to support

their ficticious storylines?)

Asking the question brings almost the answer Vincent: How many people in the

public can really evaluate the amount of factual situations or

scientifically accurate portrayals in ER or The Sopranos ? After all, I am

NOT a surgeon, I am trained in medical first response only (more then first

aid) and I am not in the Mafia... "Funny" enough , Italian community is sick

and tired by the "Italian = Mafia" stereotype and I understand them (like

most Radsafers are tired about poor nuclear power depiction) but yet, shows

are going on and strong... Here in Quebec (Canada) we had two shows called

"Omerta" and "The Last Chapter" about Mafia and criminal biker gangs. Very

interesting , very entertaining , they were my favorite shows but again, I

have no point of reference in telling what is true and what is fiction...If

I had, perhaps I would not even mention the programs now as I would have

switch channel. People are interesting in something out of their ordinary

situation and nuclear power that goes on with no problem, that gives very

little or no dose to member of the public, is the real life, not Hollywood

selling material. Why don't we start a reality show about 4 HPs in a power

plant ?

Of course shows like ER or The Sopranos may "consult" experts in the field,

as long as the experts don't blow their balloon too often...(see a previous

post on Radsafe) Of course some of the content is accurate and we should

reach accuracy. But again, what really surprises me is how HP professionals

are offended by what it is portrayed on TV about Nuclear industry. What I

would suggest is that next time you look an episode of your favorite

program, tell yourself that the electricity they are using in that nice

house is coming from a nuclear power plant and that everything is all

right...

But again, the idea is sent: A reality show in a nuclear power plant... I

will cast myself as the young foreign CHP who will take care of that tritium

problem...OUPS, you don't have CANDUs in the US...:-)

My last post, I promess !!!

Don't even get me started about the mileage (and the $$$) that television

and Hollywood and novelists derive from terrorist activities. (Oh, but ask

them directly, and suddenly it's "fiction" and "just entertainment."

Hmmm....sounds reminiscent of Radsafe...)

By the way, after quietly watching unending Radsafe messages go by on

eminently mundane (but radiologically related) topics, I note an immediate

request for those interested in one of our most direct interfaces with the

public (namely, television and Hollywood) to 'get a grip' and take their

discussion off of Radsafe. Whence the vehemence here, folks?
